Lionel Richies life and music career has been a fascinating and eventful one.   He is a famous singer, songwriter, musician and record producer as well as an activist. Lionel Brockman Richie was born on June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama USA; son of a system analyst and an educator1. He grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute before his family moved to Illinois, where he graduated from high school. Being a great tennis player, he was granted a tennis scholarship and went to Tuskegee Institute, where he graduated with a major in economics in 1974. While he was in college, he joined the Commodores, a soul music group[i]. His music career began in Tuskegee where he formed a number of groups in the mid 1960s. When he joined the commodores in 1968 as a singer and saxophonist, he signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records for one record then moved to Motown records. The Commodores became an established and popular soul group, something that is mostly attributed to Lionels talent. He spent more than a decade as the lead singer with the Commodores and became a famous face and a ladies favourite. The groups first records such as Machine Gun and Brick House were a hit. Lionel continued to write more romantic songs such as Easy, Three Times a Lady and Sail On which had tremendous success. In the late 1970s, he composed songs for other artists at a commission. Lionel established a strong friendship with Kenny Rogers for whom he wrote the number one hit Lady in 1980 and produced Rogers album Share your Love in 1981. In the same year, alongside Diana Ross, he composed and sang the theme song for a romanti c drama film ‘Endless love’. The song became a hit single for UK and US pop music charts. This further encouraged Lionel to take his own path in his music career[1]. He left the Commodores in 1982 to pursue his career as a full-fledged solo artist, although his decision did not negatively affect the group, which according to Grove’s Dictionary, gave him a boost because there was no conflict of interest (Pratt and Boyd, 51). He was replaced by Skyler Jett as the lead singer in 1983. In this year, Lionels hit album which had three hit singles that still carried Commodores style, won him his first two Grammy Awards as Best Male Vocalist and Album of the Year, and sold over ten million copies. Several hits followed after that and Lionel boasts of five ballads that have been top ten in the UK and US charts. The peak of his career was a result of a number of rich, sentiment and funky creations such as Hello, All Night Long, Say You, Say Me (which was used as the theme song for the film ‘White Nights’ and won an Oscar Award), Stuck on You among others. â€Å"It was his intention to have the hit single Say You, Say Me ready at the sa me time the movie was released with this song as its theme†[2]. He worked with the legendary pop star Michael Jackson and co-wrote the USA for Africa charity song We are the World which was recorded by an all-star artists group to raise millions of dollars for famine in Africa and consequently became a famous hit in 1985. He continued with this trend and his songs held top position on the Billboards Year End 100 chart for up to four weeks. In 1987, he finally took a break to take care of his ailing father in Alabama after an exhausting work schedule and nearly two decades of non-stop recording and performance. When his father died in 1990, Lionel made a come-back after releasing his fourth album Back to Front which was a compilation of the previous albums and it held first position in the Dutch Album Top 100 chart for twelve weeks. He embarked on a more relaxed schedule which saw his recording and performance career remain at minimum. For a long time, he had been under pressure to change his music style with the changing times, but in 1996 he released Louder than Words which maintained his soul music style which has come to be known as contemporary R B. Unfortunately, from this release on, his compositions did not achieve the success of his earlier songs although he maintained popularity in Europe as compared to the US. In this regard, since 2004, Lionel has produced an impressive top forty singles in the UK. He made a break-through when he released a studio album titled Coming Home which contained a single I Call it Love in 2006 that starred his adopted daughter Nicole Richie in the video, and it became his biggest hit in the US in ten years. In recent years, Lionel Richie has performed in famed shows such as American Idol, Australian Idol, Sydney Opera House and many others. His spring 2008 album, Just Go was also a big hit both in US and Europe. To this day, he takes his performing career seriously and is set to take concert tours of Australia and New Zealand in March and April 2011. So far, he has sold more than a hundred million records throughout his career. His family life however has not been without controversy. In 1975, Lionel married his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey and they informally adopted Nicole Camille Escovedo, the two-year-old daughter of one member of Lionels band and raised her as Nicole Richie[ii]. The couple legally adopted her at the age of nine. During their marriage, Lionel also had a relationship with Diane Alexander in 1986 which resulted in an ugly confrontation between the three parties. He finally divorced Brenda in 1993 after seventeen years of marriage. He married Diane in 1995 and they had a son, Miles and a daughter, Sofia in 1994 and 1998 respectively. They divorced in 2004. Nicole gave birth to Lionels grandchildren a baby girl and a boy in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Apart from music, Lionel Richie has been a breast cancer activist inspired by his grandmother who was diagnosed with it in the 80s but recovered and lived to 104 years. He helped to raise over $3 million for the Breast Cancer Foundation. He also planned to re-record the charity tune We are the World alongside Quincy Jones, and several other artists have asked to take part which is also expected to pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Lionel Richie has had a blissful career which was not short of ups and downs. In total he has produced a total of thirty four albums and three hundred and fifty two albums in nearly four decade of singing, writing and performing. A Comparison of Vietnamese and American Writing-Pedagogy As an international student and educator from Vietnam, I see a lot of differences in the educational systems of the United States and my own country. In order to illuminate the differences between teaching writing in Vietnam and teaching writing in America, I would like to give a brief introduction to teaching writing in Vietnam and what I have learned from a writing class here at Eastern Illinois University. In my discussion of pedagogy in Vietnam, I would like to highlight two things: how Vietnamese people study Vietnamese, and how Vietnamese study English. Though I need to read more about American writing pedagogy, I see some basic similarities between the two countries. As in the United States, mathematics and language arts are important subjects in Vietnam. In Vietnam, however, writing isn’t a subject per se, and students develop their writing skills through the study of literature. In primary school, the teacher begins by asking the student to write simple and short para graphs about what happens in his/her daily life. Popular writing topics include â€Å"the person you love best,† â€Å"pets,† and so on. When grading, the teacher pays attention to spelling, clarity, and the way students use words. In secondary school, a student begins to write longer and more difficult essays, including plot summaries, movie reviews, character- and other kinds of literary analysis. Students continue to study writing up to graduation, when they are required to demonstrate their mastery of writing skills in an exam. Students who want to go on to university must pass an additional exam. The different is, however, university students do not take courses devoted to writing. They devote their time to their majors. Form is an important element of essay-writing in both countries. As in English, an essay in Vietnam includes three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. There is a major difference, however: In America, the college essay derives from classical rhetoric. Ultimately, Aristotle and the syllogism provide the basis of a linear and logical structure. Milton’s â€Å"Of Education† and his political writings would be examples here. In Vietnam, the classical model derives from the Chinese/Confucian tradition. That tradition emphasizes the elaboration of or commentary upon a classical text or phrase. The Western essay is very linear and à ¢â‚¬Å"thesis-driven,† and compared to it the Vietnamese essay can seem circular. To Vietnamese, it is organic. Models for this form can be found in Zhuang Tzu’s, Meng Tzu’s â€Å"Doctrine of the Mean† or Literati prose. Even though these two classical models have been changed and developed considerably in modern writing, their original ideas have great influence on writing customs between the two countries. Western essay strictly follows the thesis statement and topic sentence. All sentences are coherent and support to topics sentences. Vietnamese essay, however, is circular. Students don’t go directly to their topic but approach to indirectly. The reader knows what the student is doing and tries to enjoy the essay. The approach isn’t as analytical. In Vietnam, academic essays can be of different types: description (van ta), commentary (binh luan), proof-and-explanation (chung minh va giai thich), analysis (phan tich), and critique (binh giang). In the introduction to an essay describing a landscape, a student gives general information about the place, time and setting, and the reason he/she is writing. An analysis or a proof essay is a little different. Most importantly, here a student has to give information about the author, setting and social background of the story. In the body, he/she takes up the selected text and discusses its general characteristics, outstanding f eatures, details and logic. Connections between commentary and text should be clear. The conclusion, in general, offers a brief summary of the main idea and a personal or â€Å"felt† response to the subject. The most important differences between English and Vietnamese writing are linguistic and cultural. English grammar is demanding and prescriptive with regard to such matters as tense, agreement, singular and plural forms, etc. In Vietnamese, however, word-building is very complex, and students devote their attention to morphology rather than syntax. Vietnamese (again like Chinese) has classifiers, a linguistic item unknown to English. Lexical items are variously â€Å"classified† in countless ways, including â€Å"animate† (con), inanimate (cai), â€Å"book-like† (quyen), â€Å"picture† (buc), â€Å"photographic† (tam), â€Å"food or medicine† (thuc). The classifiers can be baffling to non-native speakers of Vietnamese. Student-writers have to know how to use classifiers correctly, however, so they have to master word building skills that English students don’t. Finally, there are pronouns. â€Å"He,† to give only one example, ca n variously be any of the following in Vietnamese: no, anh, anh ay, anh ta, ga, y, ong ay, and ong ta. Knowing  these dedicated differences and using them correctly in each context is very important in writing. These linguistic features perhaps help to account for the Vietnamese love of word- play and elegant variation in many contexts where they would be unusual in English. The beautiful is important. This notion of elegance even carries over into the technology of Vietnamese writing. Computers haven’t reached most VN classrooms, and the technology of penmanship still matters. When grading, the instructor usually pays attention to the content: accord with the topic, clear form and organization, proportionality between introduction, body and conclusion, cohesive transition, logical phrases and sentences, correct spelling, clarity, neat presentation†¦ The instructo r often would underline obscure sentences or redundancies, cross out sentences that may be incohesive, contradictory and write his/her comments at the beginning of these sentences. Now we come to another question: how is a writing class organized? Because a writing class is in fact a literature class, the teacher lectures most of the time. Sometimes, he/she stops to ask students some questions related to his/her lecture or ask them to give their own opinion about some things. The class is not divided into groups for students to discuss or write collaboratively. Students listen to their teacher and write on their own. After students submit their tests, the teacher grades and comments. Normally, the teacher chooses interesting and good essays to read aloud and points out how they are interesting, what is good about them. Then teacher mentions those essays that are not very good, points out the common errors and teaches students how to avoid these errors in later tests. Since writing an essay in Vietnamese usually means writing about literature, the reader may wonder how a student writes essays on other subjects, such as history or geography. Invention is not stressed as much in Vietnam as here. Students listen to the teacher’s lecture and takes note carefully. Sometimes, professors simply dictate their notes to students. Before exams, teachers often give students a list of questions to prepare at home. Students find the answers in the teacher’ s textbooks or  notes, and then try to get them down by heart. The teacher chooses one or two topics for student to write at the exams. There are no take home exams. Students do their research the same way as here. The teacher gives student topics to write about, and the student then chooses a topic and writes a proposal. The teacher will offer suggestions or advice. After that, the student collects material from books, newspapers and the Internet and starts to write. Thesis topics are often very broad. Therefore, the student needs to convince his/her readers using reasonable and logical arguments. The way Vietnamese learn how to write in their own language is of course different from the way they learn to write in English, which is a foreign language. In the following paragraph, I’m going to point out what the differences are. In theory, a student is supposed to learn every step as a native speaker does. The purpose is to learn how to write good essays. However, a writing class in Vietnam is usually more like an ESL class than an American writing class. Freshman and sophomore students learn to write sentences and short paragraphs. The topics are often very simple, for example: write abo ut the first day at school, an unforgettable memory. The teacher focuses on grammar, and the way of using words. Juniors and seniors learn to write essays, but what they learn is basically the theory; they don’t practice writing essays very often. A student is only required to write essays in final tests or graduate exams. The essay is usually about 1-2 pages in length. A 4-page essay is the longest. The topics are about what happens in daily life. In these essays, a student writes his/her own opinion, what he/she sees and thinks. Because their English is limited, students rarely do research in the language or make many quotations. Students aren’t usually acquainted with MLA/APA styles, and teachers focus mostly on grammar errors. In order for students to practice writing, the teacher gives writing assignments for them to write at home. Then the teacher will ask a student to write the assigned essay on the chalkboard. The whole class discusses the ideas and grammar in this essay and participates in the writing process. We have seen that writing customs vary from one country to another, especially between the cultures of East and West. Differences in writing pedagogy reflect cultural and linguistic differences. Being aware of those differences would be of importance to anyone teaching in a diverse classroom. The leadership style of two individuals will have consequences on the people they lead and on the final of the conflict. The whole action of the movie is compressed in the elements described by Gen. Irwin at the beginning of the movie: he says that a castle must have four key elements, which include: the location, positioned on high ground, it must have protection from its enemies with a high wall, it must include the garrison (men willing to fight and kill for the castle), and lastly, a castle must have a flag, that the men have to protect by any means. These symbols truly describe the organization presented in the movie and forecast the taken over and the change of the leader. The officially named manger of the prison is Winter who is presented as the †bad guy’’ who commands its subordinates. But the true leader of the prisoners will be Gen. Irwin, presented as the â€Å"good guy† that will lead its subordinates by offering them self-respect and setting a positive example. Both of them have strong characteristics of leaders but one is dominated by negative features and the other one by ethical and moral principles. One has legal authority but one has the real power over the prisoners. Gen Irwin is appointed as leader by the prisoners due to his reputation outside the prison, his values and charisma but also his position of prisoner. The others saw him as one of them that will truly represent their interests. The way each leader will impose his power is presented in an antithesis. Irwin tries to lead its men by creating value and positive attitude but the other one tried to lead by sever punishments. He controlled them through fear and unethical behavior taking advantage of his superior position. People trust one and fear the other one. Winter only wanted benefits for him, to be recognized as a good leader between its peers and had no regard for the prisoners. He was proud of his performance as a prison director where no one intended to escape and no murders took place. He totally ignored the treatment he himself applied to the prisoners including killing them. In contradiction with Winter, Irwin cared about his men rather than caring about himself and how could he benefit from his position. He entrusts his men and reactivates their self respect and their attitudes of soldiers. If at the start of the movie the prisoners were not collaborating with each other and were even fighting for insignificant reasons, after Gen. Irwin takes command, the prisoners become a team and start to trust and to help each other. (as for example when one prisoner suggests that the wall isn’t build correctly he is aggressed, but Irwin delegated a small degree of power to him and makes the other ones listen to that young prisoner who will supervise the wall construction). Regarding the characteristics that made Gen. Irwin a good leader I could mention morality and ethical principles, the respect for the members of his team, ability to plan ahead using the resources available, ability to build confidence in people and motivate them to achieve a common goal, personal commitment to that goal (that lead to his death) and also viewing only the best in the members of his team, in contradiction with Winter who only searched for the worst in the people and use those negative traits to manipulate the prisoners and achieve his own goals. Winter is clearly intimidated by Gen. Irwin, recognizing in this way his character and power. He will treat differently the general at first because he was a national hero and later because he is afraid of the power the general has over the inmate and that minimizes clearly his authority in that organization. Finally when he sees he cannot win the General by his side he will loose his control and try by any means to state his position. In a small degree I would agree with the type of leadership Winter practices, taking into account the environment. That was still a prison with convicted solders and therefore extreme rules have to be adopted. Punishments have to be used to maintain the order between prisoners but this does not mean that the commander of the prison has to take advantage of his position and manipulate and mock the prisoners. (The best example would be with the basket ball. That action had no educational purpose, it was only a statement of power). Although it can also be mentioned that Gen. Irwin didn’t knew how to comply with the commands given by the major authority (Winter), actually think Irwin could not ignore the bad treatments applied to the inmates, the constant rule breaking and also the respect and trust that the other prisoners had in him. Seeing the punishment that Aguilar received for saluting him was probably the decision point where the general agreed to take over the command of his team. The wall that was demolished by the prisoners is the symbolic act of recognizing their new leader and of accepting to fallow his order. In the end of the movie, Winter losses command on the prisoners, on the guards and finally on himself. Gen Irene will take his place, becoming the true leader for the prisoners but also for the guards that will prove their respect by refusing to shut him down. This story is perfectly valid for the real world business environment . In a company, the manager is not that preoccupied about the subordinates, but prizes with his performances it obtains. Also, the managers create lots of strict rules to maintain disciplines and a sustained working schedule. At first, people might obey the rules because of fearing to break the rule and losing their jobs. But they will still appoint another leader that although does not have official authority has the respect of all the employees and might help them change the situation and gain their rights within the company. This movie points out that leadership is a powerful tool with which you can bring together people and accomplish a common goal but if it is not used correctly it can bring you or your organization to self-destruction. The message displayed by the movie about the two different points of view regarding leadership is definitely found in the business world on a large scale and with other types of implications (that that violent but surly very important for the well-being of the company and of the employees ).
