Reinventing Government in the United States Post Service In this research paper, I will discuss an overview of reinventing government in the United States Postal Service. The purpose of reinventing government is to make government work better, cost less, and get results. I will also provide examples of how reinventing has effected the organization. I will touch upon some of the history of the United States Postal Service, some of its plans for the year 2000, and how the concept of reinventing government has improved the voice of the customer, employee and the business. President Bill Clinton, January 27, 2000 stated the â€Å"we reinvented government, transforming it into a catalyst for new ideas that stress both opportunity and responsibility, and give our people the tools they need to solve their own problems.† History United States Postal Service dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress named Benjamin Franklin the first Postmaster General. The United States was a weak confederation of colonies scattered along the eastern seaboard. The postal system that was created by Congress helped bind the new nation together and made possible the growth of commerce. In 1971 the Post Office Department was transformed into the United States Postal Service, a quasi government corporation. It became an independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States. The mission of the Postal Service remained the same, as stated in Title 39 of the U.S. Code: â€Å"The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal service to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient service to patrons in all areas and shall render postal service to all communities.† Today, William Henderson is the 71st Postmaster. He was appointed the PMG and CEO of the United States Postal Service on May 16, 1998. The USPS is an agency that employs 800,000 career and 100,000 temporary employees. There are 40,000 Post Offices, and USPS maintains some 300 plants nationwide. The Postal Service fuels the nation’s economy and delivers hundreds of millions of messages and billions of dollars in financial transactions each day to eight million businesses and 250 million Americans. The United States Postal Service is becoming more businesslike and responsive to customer needs. In the process they are better able to compete with other carriers, such as, Federal Express and United Parcel Service (UPS).

Life Changing Decisions Essay

Many women in modern society make life altering decisions on a daily basis. Women today have prestigious and powerful careers unlike in earlier eras. It is more common for women to be full time employees than homemakers. In 1879, when Henrik Ibsen wrote â€Å"A Doll’s House†, there was great controversy over the outcome of the play. Nora’s walking out on her husband and children was appalling to many audiences centuries ago. Divorce was unspoken, and a very uncommon occurrence. As years go by, society’s opinions on family situations change. No longer do women have a â€Å"housewife† reputation to live by and there are all types of family situations. After many years of emotional neglect, and overwhelming control, Nora finds herself leaving her family. Today, it could be said that Nora’s decision to leave her husband is very rational and well overdue. In Ibsen’s â€Å"A Doll’s House†, there are many clues that hint at the kind of marriage Nora and Torvald have. It seems that Nora is a type of doll that is controlled by Torvald, and Nora is completely dependent on him. His thoughts and movements are her thoughts and movements. Nora is a puppet who is dependent on its puppet master for all of its actions. The most obvious example of Torvald’s physical control over Nora can be seen in his teaching of the tarantella. Nora pretends that she needs Torvald to teach her every move in order to relearn the dance. The reader knows that this is an act, but it still shows her complete submissiveness to Torvald. After he teaches her the dance, he says, â€Å"When you were dancing the tarantella, chasing inviting—my blood was on fire† (Ibsen II. 445), but she quickly shows that it is not her own choice by pleading â€Å"Please! I don’t want all this† (II. 447). This shows that Torvald is more interested in Nora physically than emotionally. He feels that it is one of Nora’s main duties as his wife to physically pleasure him at his command. Torvald is not only demanding mentally and physically, but also financially. He does not trust Nora with money. He feels that she is incapable and too immature to handle a matter  of such importance. Torvald sees Nora as a child. She is forever referred to as his little â€Å"sparrow† or â€Å"squirrel†. On the rare occasion that Torvald does give Nora some money, he worries that she will waste it on candy, pastry or something else of Childish and useless value. He shows his concern for his money when he ask Nora if is his â€Å"little spendthrift [has] been wasting money again† (I. 11). Nora’s duties, in general, are restricted to caring for the children, doing housework, and working on her needlepoint. But overall, Nora’s most important responsibility is to ple ase he husband Torvald. This makes her role similar to that of a slave. The problem in â€Å"A Doll’s House† does not lie with Torvald alone. Though he does not help the situation, he is a product of his society. In his society, females were confined in every way imaginable. Everything that women did had to have their husband’s approval, whether it delt with money, business, or anything else of significance. At times, they could not even speak their true thoughts or feelings without a harsh reprimanding. In this society, wives were to be seen and not heard. Throughout the drama, Nora keeps referring to â€Å"the wonderful.† This â€Å"wonderful† is what Nora expects to happen after Krogstad reveals the truth of her forgery of her father’s signature. She expects Torvald to stick up for her and offer to take the blame for the crime upon himself. She feels that this will be the true test of his love and devotion. However, Torvald does not offer to help Nora, in fact, he belittles her by saying â€Å"you may have ruined all my happiness. My whole future—that’s what you have destroyedà ¢â‚¬  (III. 451). This is where Torvald makes his grave mistake. Nora realizes that Torvald places both his social and physical appearance ahead of the wife whom he says he loves. This heartbreaking revelation is what finally prompts Nora to walk out on Torvald. He tries to reconcile with Nora, but she explains to him that she has â€Å"waited patiently for eight years,† (III. 456) for things to get better for her. Nora has been treated like a child all her life, by both Torvald and her father. Both male superiority figures not only denied her the right to think and act the way she wished, but they also placed a limit on her own happiness. Nora describes her feelings as â€Å"always merry, never happy† (III). When Nora finally slams the door and leaves, she is not only slamming it on Torvald, but also on everything else that has happened in her past which curtailed her growth into a mature woman. In today’s society,  many women are in a situation similar to Nora’s. Although many people have accepted women as being equal, there are still those in modern America who are doing their best to suppress the feminist revolution. Torvald is an example of men who are only interested in their appearance and the amount of control they have over a person. These are the men that are holding society down by not caring about the feelings of others. But Torvald is not the only guilty party. Nora, although very submissive, is also very manipulative. She makes Torvald think he is much smarter and stronger, but in reality, she thinks herself to be quite crafty as far as getting what she wants. However, when the door is slammed, Torvald is no longer exposed to Nora’s manipulative nature. He then comes to the realization of what true love and equality are, and that they cannot be achieved with people like Nora and himself together. When everyone finally views males and females as equals, and when neither men nor women overuse their power of gender that society gives them, is when true equality will exist in the world. Many already have a definition in mind as soon as they hear the word self-consciousness. It is made up of many concepts because it isn’t just a cognitive state, rather, many cognitive states. Lionel Richies life and music career has been a fascinating and eventful one.   He is a famous singer, songwriter, musician and record producer as well as an activist. Lionel Brockman Richie was born on June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama USA; son of a system analyst and an educator1. He grew up on the campus of Tuskegee Institute before his family moved to Illinois, where he graduated from high school. Being a great tennis player, he was granted a tennis scholarship and went to Tuskegee Institute, where he graduated with a major in economics in 1974. While he was in college, he joined the Commodores, a soul music group[i]. His music career began in Tuskegee where he formed a number of groups in the mid 1960s. When he joined the commodores in 1968 as a singer and saxophonist, he signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records for one record then moved to Motown records. The Commodores became an established and popular soul group, something that is mostly attributed to Lionels talent. He spent more than a decade as the lead singer with the Commodores and became a famous face and a ladies favourite. The groups first records such as Machine Gun and Brick House were a hit. Lionel continued to write more romantic songs such as Easy, Three Times a Lady and Sail On which had tremendous success. In the late 1970s, he composed songs for other artists at a commission. Lionel established a strong friendship with Kenny Rogers for whom he wrote the number one hit Lady in 1980 and produced Rogers album Share your Love in 1981. In the same year, alongside Diana Ross, he composed and sang the theme song for a romanti c drama film ‘Endless love’. The song became a hit single for UK and US pop music charts. This further encouraged Lionel to take his own path in his music career[1]. He left the Commodores in 1982 to pursue his career as a full-fledged solo artist, although his decision did not negatively affect the group, which according to Grove’s Dictionary, gave him a boost because there was no conflict of interest (Pratt and Boyd, 51). He was replaced by Skyler Jett as the lead singer in 1983. In this year, Lionels hit album which had three hit singles that still carried Commodores style, won him his first two Grammy Awards as Best Male Vocalist and Album of the Year, and sold over ten million copies. Several hits followed after that and Lionel boasts of five ballads that have been top ten in the UK and US charts. The peak of his career was a result of a number of rich, sentiment and funky creations such as Hello, All Night Long, Say You, Say Me (which was used as the theme song for the film ‘White Nights’ and won an Oscar Award), Stuck on You among others. â€Å"It was his intention to have the hit single Say You, Say Me ready at the sa me time the movie was released with this song as its theme†[2]. He worked with the legendary pop star Michael Jackson and co-wrote the USA for Africa charity song We are the World which was recorded by an all-star artists group to raise millions of dollars for famine in Africa and consequently became a famous hit in 1985. He continued with this trend and his songs held top position on the Billboards Year End 100 chart for up to four weeks. In 1987, he finally took a break to take care of his ailing father in Alabama after an exhausting work schedule and nearly two decades of non-stop recording and performance. When his father died in 1990, Lionel made a come-back after releasing his fourth album Back to Front which was a compilation of the previous albums and it held first position in the Dutch Album Top 100 chart for twelve weeks. He embarked on a more relaxed schedule which saw his recording and performance career remain at minimum. For a long time, he had been under pressure to change his music style with the changing times, but in 1996 he released Louder than Words which maintained his soul music style which has come to be known as contemporary R B. Unfortunately, from this release on, his compositions did not achieve the success of his earlier songs although he maintained popularity in Europe as compared to the US. In this regard, since 2004, Lionel has produced an impressive top forty singles in the UK. He made a break-through when he released a studio album titled Coming Home which contained a single I Call it Love in 2006 that starred his adopted daughter Nicole Richie in the video, and it became his biggest hit in the US in ten years. In recent years, Lionel Richie has performed in famed shows such as American Idol, Australian Idol, Sydney Opera House and many others. His spring 2008 album, Just Go was also a big hit both in US and Europe. To this day, he takes his performing career seriously and is set to take concert tours of Australia and New Zealand in March and April 2011. So far, he has sold more than a hundred million records throughout his career. His family life however has not been without controversy. In 1975, Lionel married his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey and they informally adopted Nicole Camille Escovedo, the two-year-old daughter of one member of Lionels band and raised her as Nicole Richie[ii]. The couple legally adopted her at the age of nine. During their marriage, Lionel also had a relationship with Diane Alexander in 1986 which resulted in an ugly confrontation between the three parties. Apart from music, Lionel Richie has been a breast cancer activist inspired by his grandmother who was diagnosed with it in the 80s but recovered and lived to 104 years. He helped to raise over $3 million for the Breast Cancer Foundation. He also planned to re-record the charity tune We are the World alongside Quincy Jones, and several other artists have asked to take part which is also expected to pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Lionel Richie has had a blissful career which was not short of ups and downs. In total he has produced a total of thirty four albums and three hundred and fifty two albums in nearly four decade of singing, writing and performing. His songs are still favorite soundtracks for many of his fans and he is perceived as one of the most accomplished artists of all times.
